I run the MCTraveler/ForeignTraveler server at foreigntraveler.zapto.org

The server is a vanilla backend with a proxy in between. That is the mobs and chunks are still managed by the vanilla server.

The proxy is written in c#. This wiki has been a great resource in the development.

The proxy manage

* Login: either via minecraft.net or by entering password.
* Chat
* Worlds with limited functionality that only exist inside the proxy.
* Auto speed ban(experimental, lots of false positives)
* Regions with greeting messages and possible other packet filtering
* Log player actions to avoid unwanted ones.
