I run the MCTraveler/ForeignTraveler server at foreigntraveler.zapto.org

The server is a vanilla backend with a proxy in between. That is the mobs and chunks are still managed by the vanilla server.

The proxy is written in c#. This wiki has been a great resource in the development.

Worlds with limited functionality that only exist inside the proxy, waiting queue for a free slot and a place for banned players to burn
Automatic speed ban
Regions with greeting messages and protection from some actions
Backwards compatibility, accepting 1.0 - 12w04a client on a 12w04a vanilla server.
